Different Speaker Types: Considering your Options

There are two main speaker types: full-range speakers and component speakers. Lets take a look at each.

Full-range speakers

Full-range speakers contain all of their elements in one basket. They have a woofer for all the lows, and a tweeter mounted to the woofer to produce the highs. Some of these full-range speakers will have additional drivers, like midrange or supertweeter. If your goal is to replace old or worn out factory speakers, you want full-range speakers. They’re easy to mount and usually fit existing speaker locations. They also come in a wide range of prices and power ranges.

Component speakers

Component speakers are sets that include separate woofers, tweeters and external crossovers that work together to get the best sound. In your component system, the tweeter is separate from the woofer and you can space them out to create the best sound. Your car audio will have a quality that sounds more like a live set. Because they’re separated, they are typically made from better materials than their full-range cousins. This makes them capable of producing exceptionally detailed sound.

Woofer materials

Material for a car audio woofer should be stiff and lightweight. That’s why most car audio speakers are made of synthetic films like polypropylene. This mixed with other materials like mica will give a more defined bass response. It also holds up well to heat, cold and moisture. Things that are more common to car audio than home systems.

Tweeter materials

If you like your high sounds more on the mellow side go with materials that are soft, like poly, textile blends or silk. If you prefer your highs to be brighter go with hard materials, like metal, ceramic or graphite.
