Where is the Best Place to Mount Tweeters in a Car?
Did you just purchase new component speakers and they came with a pair of tweeters? How do you know where to mount them? There isn’t one solution. Every car is different, so the location of your tweeters can’t all be the same either. However, installing your them properly can make all the difference in the sound quality of your system.
Some cars come with factory tweeters. If this is true, just install your new ones in the same location. If not, you may have to do some testing. Rule of thumb: always refer to your installation instructions that came with the tweeters for proper installation. However, here are some tips for installation.
There are 3 different mounting types:
1. Surface Mount
Fairly simple. Just make a small hole where you are going to mount the tweeter. Place it on the hole and run a speaker wire through to adhere the mount to the surface.
2. Flush Mount
Again, make a hole where you’re going to mount the tweeter. Make sure that the hole is of equal size to that the tweeter. Adjust it so that it’s level to the edge or angle. Flush mounts are a common mounting method if you don’t have factory tweeters installed.
3. Bottom Mount
Bottom mounts are used when you had existing tweeters installed. You can replace them easily without having to drill a new hole. Just place it under an existing grille, maybe add a bracket and you’re done. They deliver the best sound if installed directly in front of you, 45 degrees from your ears near shoulder level and mounted far apart from each other.
Common mounting locations:
1. The A Pillar
The “A” pillar is the one located between the front door window and the windshield. This is commonly used for factory tweeters. Because of the shallow depth, a surface mount is best.
2. Upper Door
Mounting tweeters here gives you better stereo imaging. A flush mount is recommend for an upper door mount.
3. Dash
The dash is another location for factory tweeters. However, it leaves you open for massive reflections from the windshield. A bottom mount is your best bet here.
