What are the Main Differences Between Android Auto and Apple Carplay?
Apple vs. Android has been a highly debatable topic. But, now they’re confronted with a new battle and it’s right inside of your dashboard. So, what are the main differences between Apply CarPlay and Android Auto? Which one is better integrated with your in-dash head unit?
There are several differences between these two platforms when it comes to your head unit, but the biggest one is how they organize your apps. CarPlay organizes your apps much like the iPhone. They are displayed on the homescreen as large icons and are scrollable. Every function is either one or two taps away. With Android Auto, the setup is a little different. It features a handful of icons that provide shortcuts to its various functions. This allows you to bypass the homescreen to get to the map or when choosing an audio source. Android Auto also features Google Now, which provides contextual information on the weather, notifications and shortcuts to likely destinations based on your recent searches and habits.
Both are integrated with navigation, but use their proprietary map software: Google Maps or Apple Maps. With turn-by-turn directions with well-drawn maps and verbal traffic updates, Android takes the lead on navigation. However, neither system gives you the option of using third party navigation software.
When it comes to messaging, CarPlay integrates Siri to send and respond to texts and even reads your voicemails aloud. However, it doesn’t allow you to use a third party messaging app while Android does. Depending on which app you prefer, this is a major advantage for Android.
Both CarPlay and Android Auto integrate third party audio streaming apps as well as their native ones. However, CarPlay takes the lead on this with a more extensive arsenal of supported audio streaming applications.
Finally, in terms of voice commands and search, both platforms are powered by amazing software. We would have to call this one a draw since both voice search systems are evenly matched.
